BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Construction work at South Station is nearing the end of the tunnel.

The South Station Air Rights project, a multi-year development to renovate the historic MBTA station, is expected to finish later this year, although the schedule could change due to weather or other factors.

Stage three of the project includes the completion of new escalators, stairs, and elevators at the new South Station Transportation Center, which will give passengers direct access from the train concourse to the bus terminal, as well as the completion of a mixed-use tower with residential and commercial spaces.

"It looks nice so far," one commuter told WBZ NewsRadio. "I usually shoot out the other side, so I don’t get to see this one too much. But this looks nice, they’ve done some nice renovations inside, so, so far, so good."

"It looks beautiful, just looking at the arches right here and the skylights in the top. It looks absolutely beautiful," said Ken from Mansfield. "You know, it’s hard to see what it’s really gonna look like when we get all of the scaffolding out of the way, but it looks really good."

Ken, however, was skeptical that the project will wrap up this year.

"Not a chance, not a chance," Ken said. "They can say that all they want, but I’m gonna guess maybe by next new year, we’ll see something."

WBZ’s James Rojas (@JamesRojasMMJ) reports.
