DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Classes were canceled today at St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers after reports of an active shooter on the campus yesterday afternoon turned out to be a hoax, or ‘swatting’ call.

Danvers Police Chief James Lovell said a responding officer accidentally discharged a weapon, which raised the situation from a normal swatting response to an actual active shooter situation.

Several dozen first responders including state and local police responded to the call shortly before 2 p.m. and ‘made immediate entries to campus buildings and areas.’ No gunman or threats were found, and no injuries were reported.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

The school district said that classes are scheduled to resume Wednesday.
