BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A sign of the times... speed warnings have been posted in Jamaica Plain alerting people to slow down.
But the signs aren't targeted at people driving cars.
They're more for people riding bicycles, scooters, and e-bikes.
Installed along a portion of the Greenway on Centre Street and the Southwest Corridor Park, residents we spoke to on Thursday said the warnings are needed. "You see a lot more people going 30-plus miles an hour," this resident said. "I've seen them around and I think it's good to control speed, especially when you have the electric scooters and stuff. It kind of keeps people accountable, which is nice."
The statewide safety initiative is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Residents have been complaining about people on bicycles, scooters, and e-bikes speeding on the Greenway path.
The new radar feedback boards display a smiley face when operating at safe speeds and a stern warning to "SLOW DOWN" at higher speeds.
Another resident said if the signs help improve safety, then he's all for the idea. "It actually stops a few people to going over the speed limit and making it safer, then I'll be happy."
DCR said that it has also installed speed boards along the Charles River Esplanade, Memorial Drive, Neponset River Reservation, Cape Cod Rail Trail, Mass Central Rail Trail, and Norwottuck Rail Trail.
Speed boards are scheduled to be installed on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail this summer.
