SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Many Mass. residents spent the first day of 2024 in nature.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) hosted their 33rd annual “First Day Hikes” initiative. 13 parks around the state hosted guided hikes to kick off the New Year.

At the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, Mass., Chairman of “Friends of Breakheart Reservation” Peter Rosetti said the trails were packed.

“We have two different hikes going on. One is a three-mile hike, one is a two-mile hike. They’re guided hikes, so we have a ranger with each one of them,” said Rosetti. “It’s a great time to get out and start off the New Year correct.”

At the entrance of the park families enjoyed clam chowder donated by Kelly’s Roast Beef. Terry Moriale and Nancy Siegal came to enjoy some fresh air and start their New Year’s resolutions.

“[I want to] get healthier, be more active and what better way to do it,” said Siegal.

“It’s a great way to energize yourself, get your thoughts together, exercise [and] start the New Year off right,” said Moriale.
