BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Tuesday afternoon's statewide disruption of the 911 system was caused by a firewall, officials said Wednesday.

The disruption lasted approximately two hours and caused the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to issue a statewide emergency alert.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Massachusetts State 911 Department and 911 operator Comtech, the firewall prevented calls from getting to 911 dispatch centers.

While Comtech's initial review confirmed there was no cyberattack or hack, the exact reason the firewall stopped calls from getting through is still under investigation, State 911 said.

"As the full review of the cause continues, Comtech has advised State 911 that they have applied a technical solution to ensure that this does not happen again," the department said.
