BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – Eversource has filed their winter natural gas rates in the Commonwealth and they could send shivers down customers’ spines.

The energy provider filed its proposed winter natural gas rates with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) this week.

With an increased global demand for natural gas, the energy provider expects the prices for the upcoming winter heating season to rise by approximately 20%.

The large drop in the country’s gas supply, caused by extreme weather and other challenges related to the pandemic, have also beefed up this winter’s prices.

Eversource Senior Vice President, Penni Conner, said the company is focused on helping their customers manage their own energy use while also finding more clean energy alternatives.

“We understand the effect that higher energy costs and increased energy usage can have on our customers,” she said. “We want them to know we’re here to help with energy efficiency solutions, payment assistance plans and other programs to help support customers.”

Eversource customers can sign up for virtual home energy assessments that will recommend energy-saving products for their home. They can also use the company’s new Heating Cost Calculator, which will be available when the winter rates are published on November 1.
