STONEHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Zoo New England is holding an online auction to name its new baby sloth.

On July 31, Lunesta and Nero at the Stone Zoo welcomed their fifth baby sloth into the world. Now, President and CEO John Linehan said the zoo is auctioning off bids to name the sloth.

Linehan said it is unclear whether the newcomer is male or female, but it came about through cooperation with other zoos.

“This pairing was a recommendation of our, what’s called, the Species Survival Plan.”

Lineham said the money raised from the auction will go to supporting Zoo New England. As a sloth-enthusiast himself, Linehan wants people to learn more about the species before submitting a name.

“They’re primarily nocturnal and they don’t even see any color,” he said. “Sloths are something that people are just so enamored with.”

People can vote for a name on Zoo New England’s website.
