BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Stop & Shop announced on Friday they plan to close 32 of their underperforming stores across multiple states by the end of the year, including eight in Massachusetts and 15 total in New England.

Stop & Shop said in a statement that the decision to close the stores was “to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

Across Massachusetts, the stores that are expected to close by or before early November include locations in Brockton, Raynham, Halifax, Pembroke, Shrewsbury, Newton, Springfield and Worcester.

Some municipalities on the list will be losing the sole Stop & Shop location in their community.

“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said.

After these closures, there will be 115 Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts.

Stop & Shop said employees of the affected stores will be offered positions at other locations. WBZ NewsRadio has contacted the local United Food and Commercial Workers Union for comment.
