BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the Stop & Shop strike enters its sixth day, some of the chain's competitors are seeing increased business.
Shaw's and Star Market have seen an uptick in customers, and have had to bring in extra help to accommodate the business.
Star Market/Shaws spokesperson Teresa Edington confirmed to WBZ NewsRadio that employees are being brought in from as far away as Maine and New York.
"We would like to thank all the Shaw’s and Star Market employees from across New England for their support and dedication during this busy time," a statement from Shaw's and Star Market read. "We are very proud that our team has come together to ensure that our new and existing customers have a great shopping experience."
Stop & Shop workers—some 31,000 of them—are striking to demand a living wage, pensions, and better healthcare. Stop & Shop says it is offering them a fair deal. Their last contract expired February 23.
