BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The National Weather Service announced Saturday evening that blizzard conditions were reached in several locations across Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
NWS says that light snow began late Friday night. Snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet were seen across the region. Wind gusts reached hurricane force on Cape Ann, Cape Cod, and Nantucket.
So what qualifies as a blizzard? NWS says the snow must reduce visibility to below 1/4 mile, with winds that frequently gust to 35 miles per hour or more. These conditions must last for at least three consecutive hours.
As of 5:30 p.m., the following places reached blizzard conditions:
Massachusetts:
Boston
Worcester
Beverly
Hyannis
Marshfield
Martha's Vineyard
Rhode Island:
Providence
Westerly
Newport
Block Island
