CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Striking trash collection workers returned to the job on Monday after securing a new contract.
Teamsters Local 25 members and Republic Services announced the new contract on Friday, putting an end to the 82-day strike. In a press release, the union called it the “strongest contract Republic Boston Teamsters have ever achieved,” which will boost wages and benefits for the 400 members.

Fourteen communities were impacted during the strike. Canton was one of them, and residents were happy to hear that trash collection started back up on Monday.
“I’m glad it’s over. They should’ve ended that a long time ago,” said one Canton resident.
For one woman, getting rid of the smell is only part of the relief. She said she was sick of the “maggots, and the rodents, and the flies.”
“It was terrible. It’s no fun to have to dump your own trash,” she said.
