CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students from the Blue Hills Regional Technical School in Randolph take the leap, moving from building in the school’s workshop to building homes in the real world. WBZ NewsRadio caught up with these students to see how their two home addition projects in Canton and Norwood were going as they neared completion.

“So, what we did is we took the roof off an existing garage, we lowered the existing walls and started to frame a master suite on top of that garage,” said Ron Eby, Construction Technology Instructor at Blue Hills Regional Technical School.

Eby is overseeing the group of students taking part in this year’s construction course, which involves these two major home improvement projects. WBZ NewsRadio caught up with one of the students, junior Jacob Arnstein.

“It’s really cool looking at this house when we arrive here [at the site] and thinking that it wasn’t grown men that did this, this was us, actual high schoolers,” Arnstein said.

“It makes you feel a lot of pride in yourself and others,” he added.

According to junior Riley McCroary, they have gained more from this experience than just building houses, but homes too.

“I liked it a lot, I think that we really grew as a family together which I didn’t really expect, but I also feel that we’re really close now and work together really well,” she said.

For some students, this project will help them to pursue a career in construction, while for others, it will be a great life skill and experience to remember.
