BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It is not uncommon for a dog to side-eye their owner's dinner plate, but a new study finds some breeds have a larger appetite than others.

The study, published earlier this year in the American Journal of Veterinary Research, looked at nearly 14,000 dogs enrolled in the Dog Aging Project between 2019 and 2021.

Researchers found sporting dogs—such as Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers—are most likely to beg for food.

Non-sporting dogs like Bulldogs and Poodles are less likely to beg, according to the study.

The study also found that when there are multiple dogs in the home, they are more likely to beg for food.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke with some local dog owners Wednesday to see how needful their pups are.

"It’s 50-50, it depends who she begs to," said Ryan, who owns a Golden Retriever mix named Riley. "If it’s me, I’m a little stricter. If it’s my girlfriend, she usually gives in a little bit easier."

As for what kind of food Riley wants, Ryan said, "She’s a little picky, so she is strange in that sense, but if you pulled out some ice cream, like during the summertime, she just absolutely goes crazy for whipped cream or anything like that. She’ll jump right on you for a cone or anything."

Another dog owner said their pooch "really loves eating vegetables," while another noted his dog's fondness for "steak, pepperonis, cheese, things like that."
