BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to a new study, Massachusetts comes in as the 6th fastest-talking state in the United States.
The study from the language tutoring service Preply was based on the average speech rate or syllables sounded out per second. Minnesota takes the top spot in the fastest-talking category with an average 5.34 syllables per second, that number for the Bay State is 5.28.
Other states that speak faster than the Commonwealth include Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, and North Dakota.

The slowest talkers tend to come from the south, the study finds that Louisiana, South Carolina, and Mississippi are top three for the least amount of syllables pronounced per second.
Despite stereotypes that say New Yorkers are fast talkers, the survey concludes that New York is a more talkative state than speedy. As for the longevity of conversations, Preply finds that New York is the number one most talkative state in the U.S., followed by California and New Jersey.
