CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts has a reputation for its revered higher education, and a 2026 study and list confirms that.
College website Niche compiled a 2026 list of the top colleges in America, based upon statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, as well as reviews from students and alumni.
Stacker went through the list to home in on the top 30 East Coast colleges. The Massachusetts schools that made that ranking include Tufts University at #26, Boston College at #25, Amherst College at #24, Williams College at #22, Northeastern University at #21, Boston University at #20, Harvard University at #3, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at #1 on both the nationwide and the East Coast list.
MIT earned an A+ ranking, with high scores in academics, diversity, value and the party scene.

Those stats have many MIT students excited and proud to call themselves a part of the tech school.
“I’m really proud of my school, I really like it here,” physics and biology major Sara Yesufu said. “I know so many good people, I’ve met so many friends here. I think MIT did a really good job at picking these people and also I’m so glad they chose me to come here.”
“What I found more surprising is how fun it is to be here at the same time, so I’m really grateful for the opportunity,” grad student Anna Davis said.
Davis also mentioned how she is roommates with a Harvard student and will happily bring up the list and MIT ranking higher.
“I live with another Harvard student, so I guess I’ll have to tell her that when I go home today,” she said.
