SUDBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One unique project has delivered two community benefits in MetroWest.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday in Sudbury celebrating a stronger, more reliable electric grid and the opening of a new section of the Mass. Central Rail Trail.
Project partners, state leaders, and local officials took part in the event showcasing the newly completed 7.5-mile Sudbury to Hanson segment of the MCRT that can be used for walking, running, and biking.
The route includes safe road crossings, benches, and native landscaping while connecting the Eversource Substation in Sudbury to Wilkins St. in Hudson.
Tim Revellese, Vice President of Project Management and Construction at Eversource Energy, said "We're able to provide the power to our customers, reliability to the area, and they (residents) can use it every day for their recreation purposes.."
Glen Bransky is a longtime Sudbury resident and the President of the MCRT Alliance.
He said he was able to enjoy the MCRT experience firsthand celebrating his wife's birthday. "We got on the Mass. Central, we rode east, and we got to Boston, all but four miles on the rail trail," he said.
"We stayed overnight, we had a great dinner, we woke up the next morning and rode back!"
There are now connection points along the MCRT that expands recreational opportunities.
In Hudson, the trail connects to the Assabet River Rail Trail, which gives direct access to downtown Hudson’s restaurants and shops.
In Sudbury, the MCRT intersects with the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail that allows for extended regional trips.
