SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was a market that would make others green with envy.

The Summer Solstice Plant Market took over Somerville's Arts at the Armory Sunday. More than 20 local artists and businesses set up shop as a one-stop destination for plant enthusiasts.

Organizer Cat Yem said the market started a few years ago when people took up house plants as a hobby during the pandemic. Now hundreds, if not a thousand people come to these markets as an ever-growing community.

"I do this in my spare time just because I love meeting people who also like plants and gathering with them," Yem told WBZ NewsRadio.

There was no shortage of leafy options up for grabs at the market, whether through buying from a vendor or picking up from the anonymous plant swap table.

"My apartment looks like a jungle, and I’m also very lucky because I work in a research lab that lets me keep some plants there as well," said Teá of Plants By Teá.

For Sammy Rabkin of Oh hi! Plants and Ceramics, markets like these are a way to leverage her hobby into making money for more plants.

"I can’t just have a million plants and keep making ceramics, so I wanted to find a way to be able to keep doing that, and the answer was, sell it," Rabkin said.
