BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sunset Cantina, a longtime staple of the Boston University campus, is back in business after closing last summer.
The Tex-Mex bar and restaurant at 916 Commonwealth Ave. closed in June 2022 because of financial struggles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now with new owners at the helm, the Cantina has reopened with an enthusiastic spirit.
"Sunset Cantina has always been a landmark on BU campus," said Catarina Chang. Chang, a Boston University alumnus, told WBZ NewsRadio that she and her three co-owners want to preserve the Cantina's classic décor of neon lights, murals, fiesta banners, and beer memorabilia.
"We want to keep the character of the Cantina itself intact, so we’re just trying to breathe, I guess, renew new life into it," Chang said.
While maintaining the atmosphere of the Cantina is one of their top priorities, Chang said the new owners also want to update the menu with new recipes for dishes like quesadillas, birria, and chilaquiles.
"Anything that is genuine and good," Chang described. "Abuela’s cooking, we call it, so like home recipes from your grandmother’s house."
Chang learned the hard way that the one recipe that should not be tampered with are the Sunset Cantina's signature nachos.
"We got such pushback from people that were like, 'Not my favorite nachos,'" Chang laughed. "So we were like, you know, we’re gonna give in, and I think what we serve now is amazing, so try it out."
