CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Supreme Court has ruled against Harvard University, throwing out race as a criteria for college admissions. The long-awaited decision came down Thursday morning.
In a 6-3 split along ideological lines, the court ruled that using race as a criteria for admission violates the Equal Protections clause of the 14th Amendment.
The case was brought by a group of white and Asian-American students called the Students for Fair Admissions, who felt unfairly penalized.
The newest justice on the bench, Ketanji Brown Jackson, recused herself in one of the cases because the case was against Harvard, where she was an undergrad, law student, and current member of the Board of Overseers. She participated in a similar case against the University of North Carolina because she has no ties there.
The decision is likely to upend the college admission process at schools around the nation.
