Surfer Dies After Being Pulled Unconscious From Cape Cod Water

CAPE COD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A surfer pulled from the water at Lecount Hollow Beach in Wellfleet Wednesday has died.

Officials said they received several 911 calls around 9:45 a.m. that a male surfer had fallen off their board and was facedown unconscious in the water.

The first officer to arrive on the scene, along with several surfers, pulled the victim out of the water onto the beach, where Wellfleet EMS began life-saving procedures.

The victim, identified as Martin Mackey, 48, of Brunswick, Maine, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where they later died.

Wellfleet police said an investigation is underway with state police assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office. Preliminary investigation reveals no foul play, officials said.
