BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A number of parents in Massachusetts support an age requirement for children using social media.

That's according to a new nationwide survey of 3,000 parents.

Test Prep Insight said its state-by-state survey showed Bay State parents think 14 is an appropriate age for kids to start using social media.

Eddie from Newton doesn't have children of his own, but he is concerned for his nieces and nephews. "There's too much stuff for these kids to see nowadays," said Eddie. "They are learning way quicker than we were at my age, I'll tell you that right now," he added.

Cyberbullying was among the top concerns of surveyed parents. "I think kids today need some sort of barriers because there's just too much information out there that can be negative," said Larry, a father of two adult children.

Social media is also a big concern for people with younger siblings.

Ryan is worried about what his 10-year-old brother may come across online. "I don't want him seeing a lot of the stuff I'm seeing on social media," said Ryan. "At the end of the day, it's not really going to be able to stop the kids, because as long as they have phones, they're going to be able to get on social media no matter what," he added.
