Suspect In Deadly Somerville Hit-And-Run Pleads Not Guilty

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) — A Boston man charged with striking and killing a woman crossing a Somerville street over the weekend and then driving from the scene has pleaded not guilty.

Zewdu Abate Gedamu was allowed to remain free on $1,000 bail after his arraignment Monday on charges including leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury or death.

State police say the 64-year-old Roxbury man struck 52-year-old Cheryl Pauline Richards in a crosswalk on Mystic Avenue at about 8 p.m. Saturday. She was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital. Police say Gedamu drove from the scene but later turned himself in Sunday morning.

Neither Gedamu nor his attorney, Patrick Hanley, responded to questions outside of court.
