Suspect In Fatal Hammer Beating In Lowell Held Without Bail

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man charged with using a hammer to beat another man to death before robbing the victim's safe has been held without bail.

Prosecutors said at the murder arraignment for 53-year-old Anthony Massetti on Tuesday that surveillance video shows Massetti striking 51-year-old Eril Ligonde in the head several times with a hammer in the basement of a Lowell home on Friday.

Prosecutors say the suspect then broke into Ligonde's safe and stole various items, including a gun, before fleeing.

Authorities say Massetti had been doing handiwork at Ligonde's residence. Ligonde was a former captain with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office.

Massetti was arrested Monday in nearby Chelmsford.

The suspect's attorney reserved the right to seek bail in the future and said his client is struggling with opioid abuse.
