Springfield Police Shoot, Injure Suspect During Traffic Stop

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A suspect in a drug investigation has been shot and injured by police in Massachusetts, prompting an investigation into the officers' use of force.

Springfield police spokesman Ryan Walsh says officers were conducting a traffic stop involving "a known suspect" just after 8 p.m. Thursday. He says the suspect drove his car toward two officers, and "fearing for their safety," they opened fire.

The suspect was struck in the leg and taken to the hospital with an injury not considered life-threatening. A woman in the car was also taken into custody.

The shooting occurred near Springfield College, but a school spokesman says students were never in danger.

No names were released.

The Hampden district attorneys' office is investigating.
