SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the school year starts in Swampscott, an elementary school is setting new rules for eager parents trying to pick up their kids on time.
Swampscott Elementary School — which opened in 2024 — does not get out until 2:10 p.m., before now, cars would start lining up an hour ahead of dismissal, bringing heavy traffic to surrounding streets.
"When it was a smaller school, you had less pick up," Assistant School Resource Officer Kevin Reen said. "So now that the population of the school has increased, so has the volume of people coming and going."
Under the new plan, parents and guardians will have to wait until 1:45 p.m. to line up for pick up.
Reen and officers will station themselves outside directing traffic for the time being.
"We're going to give this a shot for a few weeks, and we think it's going to be successful, so we'll have it run for as long as we can, and we just hope that the parents understand and bear with us as everybody learns the new routine," Reen said.
