SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Restoration of a seawall in Swampscott, Mass. is nearly complete after a partial collapse last year.
In May 2023, a portion of the seawall underneath the Mission on the Bay restaurant forced an evacuation as the structure collapsed into Nahant Bay. On Wednesday, rebar could be seen sticking out of the seawall on King’s Beach from Monument Ave. to the restaurant, which reopened in June 2023.

“You can’t even imagine it right now it was the size of all those rocks there and it was deep. It made me feel bad for the people that owned it. They’re nice people,” said one resident.
At the time of the collapse, town officials had already started a multi-year restoration project of the seawall. The section between Monument Ave. and Mission on the Bay is now considered the final phase of the project, which is being done by Xtreme Shotcrete. Swampscott Director of Public Works said the town had spent roughly $2.2 million on the first four phases.
“I didn’t know they were refreshing anything besides the wall in terms of work,” said another resident.
The final repairs are scheduled to be completed on May 1, 2024.
