DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Thursday morning had Dedham, Mass. parents scrambling to lock up spots for their children in summer programs.

Thursday was summer camp registration day for the Dedham Parks and Recreation Department and hundreds of parents rushed to sign up. Director Bob Stanley said it is his favorite day of the year.

“The cost of childcare is exorbitant. I don’t know how people do it, so we wanted to offer something relatively affordable,” said Stanley.

The town’s Swim and Gym program is particularly popular, giving parents some much-needed relief and providing children with fun summer activities. It only costs about $200 for two weeks of daily programming.

“You would be paying quite close to twice as much for other programs,” said Stanley.

The department blew past its registration goal with close to 1,000 registrations in just 15 minutes. Registrations generated more than $125,000 for the town during that time.
