SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —It's barely a week into October, and already the City of Salem is filled with tourists enjoying Halloween activities.

If you plan on going there this holiday weekend, you may want to think "outside the box" because parking is always a horror show this time of year.

Salem travel officials say anybody that thinks they can just drive into Salem this weekend, park the car, and enjoy themselves will be in for a surprise.

"The parking in downtown Salem is gone by 11 or 12," said Kate Fox with Destination Salem.

She added, the alternative to driving into Salem is simple, public transportation.

"Take the ferry, take the train, drive to Lynn or Beverly where there is amble parking and then take the train one or two stops," said Fox.

In fact, starting this weekend, the MBTA is beefing up its commuter rail service. They will be running trains just about every hour northbound and southbound on the weekends.
