NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The trash has finally been taken out in New Bedford.

After the city's trash company left the city with no service last weekend, a new company has been working overtime to pick up the pieces.

Tens of thousands of trash barrels were left overflowing all across the city last week. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell's office said contractor E.L. Harvey stopped collecting trash in the last few days of its contract.

The city turned to Capitol Waste of Boston, which promptly seems to have fixed the issue.

"They picked up — I found this hard to believe initially — over 10,000 barrels from Friday through Saturday. They got on it," said Mayor Mitchell.

Now, there are a small handful of overflowing barrels scattered across the city, but situation seems much improved. The mayor said the city would withhold the final check for E.L Harvey.

WBZ NewsRadio has reached out to E.L. Harvey for comment.
