BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to a recent ranking on tax competitiveness, Mass. now ranks in the bottom five worst states.

Falling further than any other state in the last year, Mass. was ranked 46th in tax competitiveness for 2023. The drop in the rankings was attributed to a new surtax on income over one million dollars implemented in November of 2022.

Boston residents were not surprised with the results, but they were still disappointed.

“When you look at housing costs and you talk about a million dollars, which sounds like a lot of money, it’s not, so that tax is troubling,” said one resident.

“It certainly does matter where it is relative to our neighbors, not just all other 50 states because residents, for example, might be more likely to move, which we saw a lot of during the pandemic, in order to avoid taxes,” said another resident not happy with the ranking drop.

“The people who can afford to pay taxes should. It’s not always a popular opinion, but I do wish we saw some of our tax dollars reflected in things like better roads and public schools,” said another resident.

“Having a competitive tax rate for corporations is incredibly important for jobs and economic growth,” said a disappointed resident.
