Teamsters Women's Committee Donates School Supplies To Local Students

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Members of the Teamsters Local 25 Women's Committee have been delivering backpacks full of school supplies to students in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, ahead of the remote fall semester.

A large percentage of the students at the Russell Elementary School in Dorchester live at or below the poverty line, and many are homeless, living in motels or shelters.

Nine-year-old Kimilly told WBZ NewsRadio she was excited to get her supplies, which will help her continue learning from home during the pandemic.

"[I got] construction paper, a journal," she said. "It makes me feel grateful, because they're taking time out of their day to put in to my day."

Joan Corey, Chair of the Teamsters Local 25 women's committee, said they were glad to be able to help out.

"We just have so much appreciation for the students, the teachers, and the administrators, for the challenges they face," said Corey. "Just to see the excitement with the children when we're here, literally bringing tears to our eyes."

Corey said anyone who wants to donate can do so at the Target registry set up by the Teamster Local 25.
