Tewksbury Neighborhood Evacuated Due to Ammonia Leak At Ice Rink

TEWKSBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Tewksbury neighborhood was evacuated due to an ammonia leak at a local ice rink Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Crews were called to Breakaway Ice Center at 20 Carter St. just before 3 p.m. where a HAZMAT condition was declared and additional ambulances were requested. Shortly thereafter, Tewksbury police ordered anyone in the surrounding area to evacuate to a safe distance away.

At 3:30 p.m, police said the ammonia leak had been contained.

Speaking at a press conference, Tewksbury Fire Chief Joseph Kearns said one worker was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

At 5:40 p.m., police deemed the area safe for residents to return.
