QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The 2024 Houghs Neck ChowdaFest brought the crème de la crème of chowders to Quincy on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Crowds gathered at the Houghs Neck Maritime Center to have a taste of the best local chowders. It’s “the calm before the storm,” David Dibona, President of the Houghs Neck Community Council, told WBZ NewsRadio’s James Rojas when he arrived before the lids came off at 2 p.m.
The annual festival usually have around 30 different chowders, nearly 300 gallons of chowder that served around 1,500 attendees.
“The last time I was here, it was a torrential rainstorm, but we still had fun,” said returning patron Sue, who had attended the event for at least the past three years.
There are two different chowder contests: one for restaurants and one for amateur cooks. Last year, Off the Hook Bar and Grill from Hough Necks won first prize in the restaurant contest.
“To me, this is all about bringing the families together and out and just having a good time with good music,” Dibona added.
Musical entertainment was provided by local band The Red’s Neckas. Admission to the event is $10, and this year’s funds will go towards future community events throughout the year.
