SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The average American is expected to spend almost $1,000 for Thanksgiving this year.
According to a survey by Talker Research that was conducted of 2,000 U.S. adults, the average total is $952.
The data includes food, travel, holiday decor, and other expenses like fixing appliances or buying a holiday outfit.
WBZ NewsRadio reporter Kyle Bray asked residents in Somerville what they thought of this price.
Some were surprised at the large cost. "That's a little insane," one said. "That's shocking," said another.
Some others thought it was more reasonable due to travel costs.
"Honestly it does make sense just because probably a lot of people are going on planes," one said.
When asked how much they were going to spend on Thanksgiving this year, residents said they planned to spend a lot less than the study's average.
"Probably like $200, I'm just going to my parents' in New Hampshire. Just doing appetizers, cheese board and stuff," one said.
Another said, "probably about anywhere in between $400 and $500."
Justin, a Somerville resident, said he's cutting costs for his celebrations this year.
"For the holidays we've decided just food and family and no things. We're not doing any traveling, we're not doing any special decorations for the season it's just what we've got and who we've got," Justin said.
Another Somerville resident, Kevin, said he doesn't care what he spends on Thanksgiving.
"My spending is dictated by what my wife wants to cook, and I don't know what it costs I just go and get it," Kevin said.
According to the survey, many are having smaller gatherings and asking guests to bring a dish with them due to increased food costs this year.
