BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The federal government announced an $81 million investment to upgrade and renovate the Charlestown Navy Yard.
The Charlestown Navy Yard is the national park home to the USS constitution, the oldest commissioned warship in the world built in 1797. The funding will go towards modernizing the park and making upgrades to the ship.
A tourist from Indiana told WBZ NewsRadio that the ship is one of the greatest symbols of the nation and should be continuously refurbished, added that “We can’t stop now. We have to keep the restoration going in honor of those who fought to keep this nation what it is.”
The Department of Interior, who announced the funding for the renovation, said in a statement this project will be an effort to continue to “better tell the stories of the nation’s past for generations to come.”
A Minneapolis women visiting the navy yard agreed with that sentiment and said that it’s “important to keep them in good shape [and] renovate it, so they came be enjoyed for hundred and hundreds of years, including the USS Constitution.”
The restoration project will also make improvements to other things, including to build a new visitor center.
