BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) — A very happy day for Boston sports fans yesterday after both the Bruins and the Celtics won their road playoff games while the Red Sox crushed the Milwaukee Brewers 12-5…a ‘Boston tripleheader’.
As far as the playoffs go, the Bruins and the Celtics are ahead in their respective series three games to one, and both are on the cusp of advancing to their second rounds.
The Bruins beat the Florida Panthers in Sunrise 6-2, a feisty affair that had Boston goalie Linus Ullmark getting in a scrum with Panthers’ forward Mathew Tkatchuk as time was running out in the game. Both Ullmark and Tkatchuk received game misconducts. That play led to a near-brawl between the two teams but order was restored and the game ended without further incident.
The Bruins have a chance to win the series at home Wednesday night and advance to the second round.
The Celtics meanwhile led most of last night’s game at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and wound up beating the Hawks 129-122. The Celtics like the Bruins also lead their series three games to one and have the chance to move on to their second round of playoffs with a win at home tomorrow night.
And then there’s the Red Sox. Newcomer Masataka Yoshida hit two home runs in the 8th winning last night, first a go-ahead solo homer and then later in the same inning, a grand-slam. Sox went on to win that game 12-5 upping their record to 12-11 on the season. They open a three-game series against the Orioles tonight at Camden Yards.
And so, Sunday was a great day to be a Boston sports fan.
After the Bruins win, one fan said the Bruins have shown all year they are one of the best teams in the league. “It’s just nice to get a win, especially after the year they’ve had,” he said. And as far as being able to advance to the next round at home Wednesday night, he said the pricey cost of playoff tickets probably means he’ll be watching the game on television. “It’s definitely going to be exciting, although it will cost a lot to get into the game…. I won’t be there.” Game five Bruins-Panthers is Wednesday night at 7.
The good time keep rolling for Boston sports fans.
