MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts is experiencing a severe blood shortage, and the Massachusetts Red Cross said it needs the public to help.

The state is seeing a "high number of traumas, emergency room overdoses [and] organ transplants," right now, said Kelley Isenor of the Massachusetts Red Cross.

The region is also seeing non-emergency surgeries from people who have been putting them off since the pandemic began. Blood bank supply also declined during the pandemic.

In response, the Red Cross is offering rewards for those who donate blood between July 7 and 31 will get rewards like an Amazon gift card and the chance to win free gas for a year. Those who give blood between July 1 and 6 will get an embroidered hat, by mail.
