MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Neponset Rowing Club in Milton is looking to expand its numbers while also making the sport accessible for all.
“Most clubs have a boat house, we row out of shipping containers down at Milton Landing,” said Club President Tom Leonard.
The club offers programs for a wide range of ages from middle school aged kids to adults who are looking to try something new.
The club was founded back in 2011 and originally offered its services to Milton High School where a club program was formed and later a varsity sports team was created that has gone on to win multiple Massachusetts State Championships.
Since then, the club has expanded past high school to include all ages and abilities, and has made it their mission to break the stigma of rowing being an elitist sport.
“If you go to any fortune 500 company and go down the hallway, you’ll see a picture of teamwork and it’s not a basketball team,” said Leonard.
The club offers scholarships for some of its new rowers who might not have been able to afford the sport otherwise.
The club is also preparing to host a gala next month that looks to raise funds for a new boathouse.
“On November 7th at the Adams Inn in Quincy, Massachusetts we’re hosting our first ever boat house gala to begin the fundraising efforts,” said Leonard.
