BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Monday, the Red Sox started their annual migration to a warmer climate.

Fans watched on Monday morning as the Red Sox’s equipment truck was loaded with everything the team needed for Spring Training. Known as Spring Training Truck Day, it marks the start of a 1,480-mile trip to Fort Meyers, Fla. and the unofficial start to baseball season.

Al Hartz of Milford is behind the wheel of the 53-foot truck for the 27th time. This year’s load included over 20,000 baseballs, 1,100 bats, 20 cases of bubble gum, 60 cases of sunflower seeds and much more.

Before going to Fort Meyers, the truck also stops at Polar Park in Worcester, Mass., where the WooSox mascots and fans will give the truck another send-off.

WBZ NewsRadio’s James Rojas spoke with fans at Fenway Park watching the truck get loaded.

“I have tickets for Fort Meyers in March, not for opening day of Spring Training, but I have tickets to one of the games and it’s really exciting,” said one fan. “I’ve always wanted to go to a spring training game. It’s always been on my bucket list.”

“I thought there would be more people around because I think it is a cool event to start the season,” said another fan.

“First sign of spring, right?” said another fan.
