SCITUATE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Scituate Turkey Trot returned after 12 years to help a local food pantry during the holiday season.
Some Scituate residents suited up in turkey and pilgrim costumes despite the raw and rainy weather Thanksgiving morning to help those in need.
“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger each year, if you are coming be a part of the community bring some food items for the pantry, the community really responds to that,” said Jim Pollard, Director of Outreach for the Scituate Food Pantry.
The pantry has a holiday food wish list of canned fish, mac and cheese, and seasonal Thanksgiving dishes.
“Now we have families [so] we carry diapers, formula, school snacks, I mean it’s a broad range of people [in need],” said Elizabeth Leblanc, Director of Home Delivery for the pantry.
“We brought some cans, some pumpkin and some condensed milk so that hopefully people can make some pies,” said a man who donated to the pantry.

Turkey Trot organizer Megan Gajewski said people who participate in the race enjoy the laid-back nature of it.
“Hundreds of people, every year come and do the race, they love being able to start whenever they want, it’s not a timed start it’s an unofficial trot so, it’s really helped the community!” said Gajewski.
Gajewski added that the only requirement to participate in the race is a food donation to the pantry. The course runs 2.5 miles around Scituate Harbor at the Lighthouse.
Participants are encouraged to wear costumes too!
“I’m wearing a turkey hat, a turkey tutu, and long turkey socks!” said a race participant.
