MARSHFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Beer, food, music, and cornhole: that’s the scene at Stellwagen Beer Co. in Marshfield.
The South Shore Food Bank hosted its second annual Hunger Games Cornhole Tournament. Unlike the Hunger Games from the popular film franchise, this event is all about addressing the food insecurity crisis and feeding the hungry.
The cornhole tournament brought together serious and leisure players for a fun time.
Father-daughter team Lauren and Rick Anderson told WBZ NewsRadio that they’re just recreational players and were feeling nervous leading up to the games.
“That’s why we were looking up the actual rules because we’re like ‘oh no, there’s like probably people that actually like play for a living’,” Lauren said.
Meanwhile, Julie told WBZ NewsRadio that she takes cornhole very seriously and drinks beer to help her “[take] the edge off, I guess, the anxiety or anticipation; definitely helps my game,” she said
The Andersons are not drinkers, and they hope that’ll be their “advantage.”
Pam Denholm, the executive director of the South Shore Food Bank, said that food insecurity is at its highest in Greater Boston, even after Covid-19.
“The Greater Boston Food Bank, in their latest report, said that one in three people are skipping meals or experiencing food insecurity because they can’t afford enough to eat,” she said, hoping that this fundraiser help them reach their goal to raise $20,000.
