LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the last leg of a pedestrian trail that will connect Lynn to Nahant.
The Northern Strand Community Trail runs from Everett, and continues through Malden, Revere, Saugus, and currently ends at Western Avenue, about 1-mile west of downtown Lynn.
The nonprofit community organization Bike to the Sea plans to expand the trail by two miles from Lynn’s Western Avenue to the shoreline at Nahant Beach.
The organization said on their website that the expansion “project is expected to provide safer and improved transportation access for bicyclists and pedestrians."
Bike to the Sea Program Manager Agnes Recato told WBZ NewsRadio that the completion of this project has been “a long time coming.”
“[A] lot of time and effort has been put into advocating for this trail as well as this extension, and getting people to the beach has been a really big goal of ours,” she said.
Recato said that biking is not the only option.
“Even though our name is Bike to the Sea, we encourage everyone to get to the sea no matter what type of transportation you use, whether it be a scooter, or your own feet,” Recato added.
Once complete, the trail will span nearly 14 miles from Everett to Nahant Beach.
