BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — More sun isn't just brightening our days.

Cleveland Clinic's Dr. Neha Vyas says it's also brightening our moods.

Here in the northeast, we are gaining about three minutes of daylight each day leading up to the summer solstice on June 21, when we will have more than 15 hours of sunlight, the longest day of the year.

Meanwhile, this time of the year is just right for early birds who are enjoying the sun coming up early, just after 5 a.m.

Also enjoying a beautiful sunny day on Wednesday in Boston's Public Garden was a visitor from Ireland.

She was asked if she gets much sun back home. "No, not really," she laughed.

But as far as her visit to Boston goes, she loves it. "It's nice to just wake up in the morning and the sun being up instead of waking up when it's dark like the wintertime."

Dr. Vyas said the sun is a good source of vitamin D, which is critical to bone health, immune balance, and mood regulation.

Those are benefits this resident appreciates. "Definitely, I think that when lacking vitamin D, having the sun out longer is so helpful."

Dr. Vyas warned that the flip side of beneficial sunshine is getting too much of it.

She recommended using sunscreen and staying hydrated this summer.
