BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – This generation of grocery shoppers aren’t reaching for the Spam when it comes to shelf stable protein, but they are reaching for tin fish.

Yes, tinned fish, what your grandparents used to eat. This can range from anything from oysters to sardines to salmon. According to data cited by the Wall Street Journal, sales of canned seafood in the United States rose nearly 10% in 2022 alone.

Since then, it has taken social media by storm. On TikTok alone there are tens of thousands of videos with tinned fish tagged in the caption. Those videos have millions of likes combined.

WBZ NewsRadio asked around, and a lot of people remember the older generation loving the shelf stable protein.

“He loved canned sardines; he would eat them all the time. They are great on crackers though!" said Mike about his dad.

Now, more than ever, savory dinners, and salty snack plates are elevated with smoked salmon, or octopus on a cracker. Everyone takes their own liberties with the best combination.

“Tin fish is so good on toast with chili oil and honey,” said one woman on her way to work, dreaming about her lunch later.

With the affordability and health benefits of tin fish, it seems like an easy way to up your omega-3 intake.
