BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cold weather has put a damper on those with green thumbs.

National Gardening Day is celebrated on April 14, encouraging people to get outdoors and start planting. However, a recent spell of cold weather has many gardeners holding off from starting their gardens out of fear that the plants won’t make it.

“I do a little summer squash, zucchini tomatoes and lots of cucumbers, but who is planting seeds in this weather?” said one man.

“[It’s] too cold, way too cold,” said one woman.

Others are less worried about planting and more concerned about having to brave the cold to do some yard work.

“No, I definitely wouldn’t [be celebrating]. I don’t want to rake; I don’t want to do anything with this weather. I want to be in the heat and it’s definitely cold,” said another man.

Not everyone has pushed off planting. Some have already gotten a jump start indoors, hoping not to lose any of the growing season.

“In the windowsill, you start your little spring garden and then you can bring it outside, but it’s definitely still cold,” said another man.
