SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Witch City is flooded with tourists this summer.
Salem is known for getting a lot of tourists around Halloween in October, but it is becoming an increasingly popular summer destination. Assistant Director of the Salem Chamber of Commerce Jeff Swartz said many are shifting their trip to the summer months when it’s a little less crowded.
“Summer’s really busy. There are tons of great events happening [and] the restaurants all have outdoor dining. The tourists, they realize that October gets really busy and a lot of fun and great value can be had in the offseason and in the summertime,” said Swartz.

Swartz also said that the boost in summer tourism has made it easier for businesses to have an influx of customers well ahead of Halloween season.
“One of the nice parts is that the business is getting spread out much more throughout the year, so businesses aren’t relying quite as much on the October push. Obviously, it’s a bid time for the budget. But, summertime is proving a valuable time too to be in business and operating and quite a fun time too,” said Swartz.
He said there are a lot of international visitors, as well as people from across the country.
“It’s always a place that we’ve been wanting to visit,” said one man visiting from Canada. “It’s very attractive. Everybody knows about Salem.”
