WALPOLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Eight horses were killed when a fire broke out late Tuesday night at a horse farm in Walpole.
Ten horses were rescued from the fire that tore through the two-story barn at Mor-Linn Farm on North Street.
There was also reported to be sawdust and hay inside the barn that helped fuel the fire.
Investigators said the horses that perished in the fire were housed on the barn's second floor.
Fire crews from Westwood were called in to help contain the fire from spreading to a nearby home and another barn.
Cormac and Catherine Kennedy own the 150-year-old barn and farm where riders board their horses.
While an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, severe thunder and lightning storms were passing through the area at the time of the fire.
Fire officials said the barn is considered a total loss and will be demolished.
Correction: An earlier version of this report said the Stonehill College equestrian team boarded horses at the barn. The school stopped using the facility in 2024.
