SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Halloween is known for handing out treats to children, but some dogs in Salem, Mass. wanted to get some treats of their own on Saturday.
The 2023 Howl-o-ween Pet Parade gave dogs and their owners the chance to show off their Halloween costumes. They walked through Salem meeting other pet owners and residents hoping to see adorable puppies.
Mike and his Chihuahua dressed up as Ursula have been coming to the parade for the last nine years.
“I bought a wig on Amazon that’s meant for people and I chopped it down to fit a dog,” said Mike. “I do this every year, it’s kind of just a hobby of mine. I taught myself to sew just to put him in costumes every year.”
Mike said he has a closet filled with previous year’s costumes.
“He’s been Lucy from I Love Lucy, he’s been Austin Powers, he’s been Beetlejuice, he’s been a character from Mama Mia,” said Mike.
Jean and her family of two humans and two dogs wore matching bear costumes for their second year at the parade. Last year, they were a family of baby sharks.
“It’s always awesome. Everybody’s so happy and the dogs look so cute and they have a lot of fun meeting each other,” said Jean.
Hannah and her partner attended the event with their three dogs dressed in Beetlejuice costumes.
“We were looking at events and we saw this and we were like man we have three dogs. Aidan is kind of on his last legs so this might be the last Halloween we have with him, so we wanted to make it really special.”
