KINGSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — We've all heard of trick-or-treating.

But how about 'trunk-or-treating?'

Parents have been pooling together their candy and cars at open parking lots for these celebrations over the years, and they seem to be catching on.

Parents show up with their kids with decorated trunks full of candies to designated parking lots creating a kind of mobile neighborhood that creates a safe way for the kids to get their candy.

Each trunk-or-treat is unique with its own set of rules, and there are different ways to run a trunk-or-treat depending on what organizers agree to do, but in the end, many parents agree that it's a safer way for kids to trick-or-treat.

Along with costumes and music, there can be games, contests, giveaways, and anything that organizers agree to do beforehand.

Linda from Kingston is one of the parents behind trunk-or-treats.

She said that while it's not the traditional way of trick-or-treating, kids still get their candy and it's done in a safe way. "We plan for this and make sure the kids are getting candy in a safe environment," she said. "Parents can drive right up to the lot with their kids. They can visit with us while kids go from trunk to trunk getting their candy after it's been checked for safety. It's still trick-or-treating but done in a very safe way."
