BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was last call at Twin Donuts in Allston on Sunday, as many locals lined up to goodbye to the iconic neighborhood spot.

“I’ve been coming here close to 50 years,” one long-time diner told WBZ NewsRadio. “You get to know everybody that’s been coming here for years.”

Twin Donuts on the corner of North Beacon and Cambridge Streets has been open for seven decades, since 1955. The massive pink neon sign has since become a well-loved Boston landmark for cheap eats.

One emotional customer said she and her family had been coming every weekend for years with their young daughter. “There’s nothing that feels like they will get to know you in the Allston area as much anymore,” her husband said, as they sat at a corner table.

The owners announced the shop’s closure earlier this month and the news hit the community hard.

Ownership of the shop was taken over 25 years ago by the Taings, a family that immigrated to the Boston area from Cambodia. The family said it’s been a privilege and honor to had serve the community.

The family hasn't publicly given the reason for the closure, but it comes amid a downturn for small business traffic in the area after the pandemic.

One resident recounted being asked, "Where are you relative to Twin Donuts?" when he first moved into the area. "It’s that much of a cultural landmark," he added.
